My family emigrated to the United States in 1973-1974. My father was adament that we all become United States citizens. The path to citizenship for me was a temporary citizen (not sure what they called in in those days), followed by a citizenship test when you turn 18. I took that test in 1984 prior to starting college. The interview with the immigration agent was more like a conversation as he knew my high school, my teachers, and principals. Since I emmigrated when I was young, I only had a Pittsburghese accent. The agent made me feel comfortable and he was easy to talk to.
Soon after high school, I attended Pennsylvania State University to become an Aerospace Engineer - my father was very proud since he was the first educated engineer in his family, and I was the first to enter Aerospace - a Rocket Scientist in the family! I felt every moment of that experience and still recall the many vehicles and projects I worked on as a Guidance and Navigation Controls engineer.
Life happens and I eventually got climbed on to the IT train in mid 1990s with the rise of "Dot Coms" by joining ADP as a Sr. Software Engineer, eventually returning to Pittsburgh to continue my IT journey. I stayed versatile and went back to engineer as a Sr. Systems Engineer at Westinghouse's Nuclear Automation division where I shepphearded requirements for the new AP1000 Nuclear Power Plan design. To be honest, the job was not difficult, but it was challenging working across many sub-systems - the real challenge of that job!
Fast-forward a couple of decades and I continue to work in IT.
